A couple paused among the rows of gloves at Von Maur in Normal, looking over candy-colored leathers, bright knits and smooth cashmere before selected a dressy red leather pair for their daughter.

"Their theme is gloves this year and everybody in the family is getting some kind of a glove," said Angela Webb, department manager of accessories and handbags. There was one glove she couldn't help with, they planned on buying baseball gloves for a son and grandson.

Gloves aren't just for shoving into pockets anymore.

"It's what's making the outfit," Webb said. "So many people are saying they're not buying new clothes, they're buying accessories to make them look new. For those who wear all black, it's a way to step out a bit."

Angela Langrehr keeps a basket of gloves by her front door.

"In the morning, I walk by and ask, 'What do I feel like?'" the Von Maur human resources manager said.

There is no shortage of choices with fur-trimmed leathers, loose- weave knits and super-soft
embroidered patches cashmere that feels like a baby's blanket.

Laura McDowell, fashion spokeswoman for T.J. Maxx in Framingham, Mass., said one pair of gloves just won't do it this year. A bulky pair is OK for pumping gas but you've got to have a jewel-toned pair, maybe even gold or silver metallic for the weekend.

Subtle silver and gold are selling well, said Webb, but there's another color that's even hotter.

"We are seeing a lot of red. It laid low for awhile but now it's back."

What you don't want to do, she said, is match your gloves with your coat.

"You don't want to look too put together. You want pinks with blacks."
