Former Jacksonville Port Authority Chairman Tony Nelson pleaded not guilty Monday to 44 counts that include bribery, mail fraud, money laundering, conspiracy and lying to the FBI.
Accused co-conspirator Frank Bernardino, who federal prosecutors said funneled money to Nelson from a dredging company looking to buy Nelson's influence, similarly pleaded not guilty to his 36 counts.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Devereaux said during the arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Thomas Morris that it was likely the two men would face separate trials because of statements one or both have made implicating the other.
Fendi Bags Preparing for those trials will take six to eight months, said attorneys for both men. The FBI has some 90 boxes of material they will have to comb through, including recordings from two months of wiretaps.
The case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan Timothy J. Gibbons
MESERVE WITHHOLDS PLEA AS MOTION IS PREPARED
Suspended Jacksonville City Councilman John Meserve withheld entering a plea in his arraignment in Circuit Court Monday while his attorney prepares a motion to dismiss a third-degree felony charge against him for his involvement in Mayport land deals.
Meserve, a former Atlantic Beach mayor, is charged with operating without a real estate license. He is accused of illegally profiting $105,000 in commissions during four Mayport real estate transactions in 2005 and 2006.
The case also was reassigned to a new judge since Circuit Judge Mark Mahon claimed a personal conflict with Meserve last week. Chief Circuit Judge Donald Moran assigned the case to retired Senior brochure printing Judge Richard O. Watson from St. Augustine.
Meserve, 69, has said he was only acting as a consultant for property owners. He said Don Wolfson, also a former Atlantic Beach mayor, and his cousin Dennis Wolfson were the actual licensed brokers acting on behalf of Jacksonville development firm Vestcor Cos., the company that bought about $10 million in property along the Mayport waterfront. CLAY COUNTY
MAN GETS MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES IN FATAL CRASH
A Clay County man has been charged with DUI manslaughter in a crash that killed the passenger in his car in October.
Rocky Dustin Gomez, 31, of Orange Park also was charged with vehicular manslaughter in the accident on County Road 220 just east of Paradise Mooring just before midnight Oct. 19. Passenger Charlee St. Clair Anderson, 25, of Orange Park, was killed.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Gomez was traveling westbound at nearly 80 mph in a 45-mph zone when he lost control and the car jumped the median and struck an eastbound car. The driver of that car, Derek Mayo, of Green Cove Springs suffered minor injuries.
All three people were wearing seat belts. Gomez' blood-alcohol level was .15, nearly double the state level of .08 considered impaired to drive.
Since 1996, Gomez has been ticketed 30 times for traffic, license or vehicle registration violations and charged once with fleeing and eluding police. Of the traffic charges, six each are for careless driving and speeding, according to Clay County court records. Dana Loewe Handbags Treen
