Have-a-go hero hurt in bag sna

A WOMAN was left fighting for her life after suffering a fractured skull as she desperately tried to stop a thief who stole her daughter's handbag.

The 42-year-old Killamarsh woman was said to be "stable" in Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire Hospital today - after her injuries were initially described as life-threatening.

Both women gave chase after a thief snatched her 21-year-old daughter's handbag from the trolley they were pushing across the car park of Morrisons store in Eckington Road, Halfway.

The thief leapt into a stolen Ford Escort and tried to drive off but both women tried to block the car.

They were thrown on to the bonnet as the thief set off, and they tried to hold on to the led street lights car, but were thrown to the ground as he braked sharply.

The victim was hurt as her head struck the ground.

Her daughter made a second attempt to stop the car and sustained widespread cuts and bruises.

Police said the car park was busy at the time and several people were seen on CCTV videos attempting to give chase.

The exit was busy with traffic and the offender drove out through the entrance lane, forcing a car to reverse.

Police are now trying to trace that driver and others who saw the incident, just after 6pm on Saturday.

The car, with the registration number K146 FTL, had been stolen earlier from Crystal Peaks and was also seen at the Drakehouse shopping complex.

Det Sgt Kevin Brown said: "The handbag was hooked on to the trolley, rather than someone having hold of it, and he managed to get it and run off.

"Both women ended up on the car bonnet and then came off.

"The mother's injuries were believed to be life threatening initially, although her condition is stable today. We know there were a lot of people around and that some gave chase.
