EU approves extension of anti-dumping duties on Chinese shoes

BRUSSELS, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) governments on Tuesday approved a 15-month extension of anti-dumping duties on Chinese and Vietnamese leather shoes.

The decision was taken by a simple majority without discussion at a regular meeting of EU environment ministers, the EU said in a brief statement.

On Oct. 5, 2006, the EU imposed anti-dumping duties of up to 16.5 percent against Chinese leather shoes for two years, a decision widely criticized by EU retailers and consumers.

Brussels temporarily reimposed the tariff pending a review launched last October when the penalty duties should have expired despite opposition from the majority of member states.

During the review period, which usually lasts 12 to 15 months, the duties remained in effect.

In an informal vote, the EU's anti-dumping committee refused to extend the anti-dumping duties, but the European Commission still proposed an extension earlier this month.
