The pensioner, in his eighties, from Murton, near Sunderland, paid out an extortionate sum for clothing, shoes and watches a period of months.

And police say they have arrested and bailed a 45-year-old man on suspicion of fraud, pending further inquiries.

Detective Constable Clare Neill, of Seaham CID, said inquiries had revealed the elderly victim paid out increasing amounts for items brought to his home in Barnes Road.

She said: "The caller began making greater financial demands on the victim, sometimes taking him to the Post Office
embroidered patches to withdraw up to pounds 250 and also asked him for a couple of blank cheques.

"Also, it's likely this person has been operating elsewhere in the county and I would urge anyone who thinks they have been approached by someone in similar circumstances to contact police."
